What causes ankle pain?
Ankle pain can be caused by several factors, such as:
Sports Injuries including
  • a fall
  • improper training techniques
  • unsupportive footwear
  • increasing your weight-bearing  activities
  • general overuse.
Biomechanical factors such as
  • hypermobility
  • muscle imbalances
Medical conditions such as
  • arthritis
However, sometimes, ankle pain can arise from daily wear and tear.
Our podiatrist will be able to identify the cause of your pain and support your recovery.
COMMON TYPES OF ANKLE PAIN:
Ankle sprain
This can be caused by twisting during sports like football, dance, rugby, or running, which damages the ligaments in the ankle.
Peroneal tendonitis
This is irritation or inflammation in the tendons that run along the outside of your ankle and foot caused by an increased load or overuse of the tendons.
Posterior tibial tendonitis
Also known as Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD), it is the common cause of adult-acquired flat foot. The posterior tibial tendon helps support the arch on the inside of your foot by connecting the calf muscle to the bones on the inside of the foot. When this tendon is injured or breaks down, it can cause a lot of pain and affect how you walk and run.
Inside (or medial) ankle pain
This can be caused by a few conditions, including:
  • Tibialis posterior tendinopathy – Pain in the tendon that runs down the inner side of the ankle and foot
  • Flexor tendonitis – inflammation of the tendons running down the inside of the ankle and under the foot to the toes, making it painful to bend your big toe.
  • Medial calcaneal nerve entrapment – Burning or tingling in the areas below the inner bony projection of the ankle and under the heel.
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome – caused by compression of the posterior tibial nerve as it travels through the tarsal tunnel.
  • Stress fracture – tiny cracks in a bone which are caused by repetitive force, often from overuse
Achilles Tendinopathy
Damage to the Achilles tendon, which can range from inflammation to a complete rupture, may cause pain in the back of the heel, ankle, and lower leg.
