Orthotics

Ankle Foot Orthotics

Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are custom-fitted to guarantee optimal results. At Bucks Podiatry, our expert podiatrists will ensure you receive the perfect AFOs for your needs.
What is an ankle foot orthosis?
Understanding that ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) differ significantly from foot orthotics is essential. An ankle foot orthosis is a brace worn on the lower leg rather than a shoe insert.
AFOs consist of plastic splints that support the lower leg, ankle, and foot, ensuring that the ankle and foot remain optimal for walking and standing.
Your podiatrist can recommend the most suitable ankle-foot orthosis option for you, as there are several variations available.
  • Articulated AFO  includes a hinge to control ankle movement or assist with flexibly correctable foot drop.
  • Rigid AFO supports the knee, ankle, and foot, keeping the ankle still and in a fixed position.
  • Dynamic ankle foot orthosis is made from thin thermoplastic and will be customised to fit your foot and ankle. It’s more flexible than other AFOs, allowing more movement from the foot.
Why would someone need an AFO?
You might receive AFOs for the following reasons:
  • Realigning your foot and ankle joints
  • Preventing abnormal movement
  • Supporting and healing weakened muscles and tendons
  • Supporting and protecting your ankle and foot joints
What conditions can an ankle foot orthosis treat?
At Bucks Podiatry, we primarily use foot orthoses to treat ankle issues such as:
Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD)
This condition occurs when the posterior tibial tendon, which runs from the calf down the ankle and into the foot, tears or becomes inflamed. PTTD can cause the arch to collapse and the ankle to deform.
Severe tendon problems
Tendon issues can also affect the ankles or feet. AFOs can play a crucial role in alleviating discomfort by offering support to the lower leg, ankle, and foot. This support aids tendon healing and helps prevent further deterioration of the condition.
Foot drop
Are you having trouble lifting the front of your foot? Ankle foot orthoses can significantly enhance your walking mobility if you're experiencing flexible foot drop due to nerve damage or injury.
Severe ankle arthritis
Arthritis can impact various parts of the body. Ankle foot orthoses can help improve mobility in ankle arthritis patients.
How to wear AFOs
Your podiatrist will guide you on how to wear and care for your AFOs. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your treatment:
  • Always wear cotton socks or tights under your ankle foot orthoses.
  • Take your AFOs with you when buying shoes. Look for comfortable shoes or trainers that can accommodate your AFOs.
  • Try to find shoes that lace up and can open wide to provide plenty of space.
  • Clean your AFOs with a damp cloth, then dry them with a towel.
How long do I wear AFOs?
You might feel some general muscle aches until you're used to wearing the AFO. Start by wearing your AFO for just one hour on the first day while engaging in low- to moderate-level activities. Increase the wearing time daily by 30 minutes to one hour until you feel comfortable wearing your AFOs for the number of hours our podiatrist has recommended.
We want to emphasise the expertise of our podiatrists in accurately identifying the cause of ankle pain and providing effective treatment. At Bucks Podiatry, our focus is on delivering high-quality custom ankle foot orthoses and providing ongoing support. Rest assured that our podiatrists are highly trained and dependable.
