Shin Splints

Shin Splints

Are leg pains stopping you from completing your first charity run or passing an essential work fitness test?
At Bucks Podiatry, our Musculoskeletal Podiatrists are highly experienced at solving leg pains and building up strength and confidence so that patients feel empowered to achieve their goals again.
What are shin splints?
Shin splints, known as medial tibial stress syndrome, refer to the discomfort experienced along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia) during physical activity. This condition commonly affects athletes and individuals who engage in activities that place significant stress on the lower legs, such as running, jumping, or dancing. The pain associated with shin splints can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by swelling in the affected area.
What causes shin splints?
Shin splints can be attributed to factors such as overuse of muscles, improper exercise techniques, or anatomical irregularities.
Different conditions can lead to shin splints and include:
Medial Tibial  Stress Syndrome,  which causes pain and tenderness along the inner side of the lower leg that improves on activity and gets worse after resting.

Tibial Stress Fracture occurs when medial tibial stress syndrome is left untreated and can prevent you from fully bearing weight on your legs. It is usually characterised by local swelling, specific pain, and tenderness on the leg bone.

Popliteal Arterial Entrapment Syndrome is when the main artery behind the knee becomes compressed by surrounding muscles or tendons behind the knee. Which can lead to the lower leg can cause symptoms like calf pain, cramping, and difficulty walking during exercise.

Biomechanical Overload Syndrome is a common issue in runners and can often predispose to more significant injury. Calf pain/tightness after runs is a common sign..
Sciatica
Compartment Syndrome is increased pressure inside a muscle, which restricts blood flow and causes pain.
Both medial tibial stress syndrome and tibial stress fracture are common among runners. Females, military personnel, and individuals with very flat or highly arched feet are at higher risk.

Each treatment approach will be explained in detail to ensure you understand the available options comprehensively and can make an informed decision regarding your care.
To effectively address shin splints, it's essential to use the proper treatment measures to prevent the condition from getting worse and promote optimal healing.
If you're experiencing shin splints, consult with one of our podiatrists for the best treatment options tailored to your needs.
Each patient has a plan made to suit them, their goals and their stages of injury/recovery.
