Patella Tendinopathy

Patella Tendinopathy

Are you experiencing painful knees?
Are you worried you have Jumper Knee?
Book an appointment with our musculoskeletal podiatrist. He can help you with a personalised treatment plan to get back to the activities you enjoy.
What is patella tendinopathy?
Jumper's knee, also known as patellar tendinopathy, is a painful condition that affects the patellar tendon linking the kneecap to the shinbone. It often occurs in athletes and people engaged in repetitive jumping or running activities. This condition can greatly affect your mobility and overall quality of life.
It can occur due to overuse and repetitive stress on the patellar tendon, leading to small tears and degeneration. This condition typically causes pain, stiffness, and swelling in the front of the knee, just below the kneecap.
How to treat patella tendinopathy
After your initial assessment with our podiatrist, during which we will carefully examine your knee, take a thorough medical history, and discuss your symptoms, we will evaluate if Shockwave therapy would be a beneficial treatment option.
Shockwave therapy shows promising results in managing patella tendinopathy effectively. Multiple sessions are usually required for optimal outcomes.
Alongside Shockwave therapy, our podiatrist will create a personalised treatment plan, which could include:
  • Physical Therapy: Specific exercises and stretches to strengthen muscles and enhance flexibility.
  • The RICE Protocol can effectively manage pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing by incorporating rest, ice, compression, and elevation.
  • Medications: pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs, which can be obtained over the counter or with a prescription from your GP.
  • Shockwave Therapy: reduces pain and accelerates rthe healing of damaged tissue
  • Orthotics: Customised orthotic devices can support and correct any underlying biomechanical issues.
  • Activity Modification: Temporary modification or avoidance of activities exacerbating symptoms, allowing the tendon to heal.
