What are flat feet?
Having flat feet, also known as flatfoot, fallen arches or ples planus, is a condition where one or both feet have little to no arch. When standing the pads of your feet press into the ground. You often can't see an arch in the foot, but sometimes the arch appears when you lift the foot.
What causes flat feet?
There is no obvious cause for flat feet, but it can be
  • congenital
    or acquired through
  • injury
  • due to ageing
  • obesity
  • certain medical conditions.
Symptoms of flat feet
In flat feet, overpronation, characterised by excessive inward rolling of the foot during walking or running, can disrupt the body’s natural shock absorption and place extra stress on the feet, ankles, hips, and lower back. Over time, this can lead to various symptoms, including:
  • Leg cramps
  • Muscle pain (aching or fatigue) in the foot or leg
  • Pain in the arch, ankle, heel, or outside of the foot
  • Pain when walking or changes in your gait
  • Toe drift (front part of the foot and toes point outward)
Treatment of flat feet
Our podiatrists will carefully check your feet, including how you walk, to accurately find out about any issues with flat feet. To fully check, we may also use special tests like X-rays or MRIs to get more information. Your personalised treatment plan could include:
Physical Therapy: to strengthen your foot and ankle muscles, improve stability, reduce pain, balance and prevent further complications.
Shockwave Therapy: Used to reduce and elimatnate pain, shockwave promoted the healing of damaged tendons and fascia.
Custom Orthotics: Our orthotics are tailored to distribute forces evenly across your feet and correct biomechanical abnormalities.
Footwear Recommendations: Our podiatrists will help you choose the right footwear with proper arch support, cushioning, and stability.
Medications and Injections: We may recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to manage pain and inflammation. In some cases, we can give corticosteroid injections to relieve severe pain and inflammation.
Surgical Intervention: Surgical options can be considered if non-surgical treatments are ineffective or if there are significant underlying foot conditions. Procedures can correct deformities, rebuild arches, and strengthen joints to improve foot function and reduce pain.
If you're experiencing pain or discomfort due to flat feet, seeking personalised treatment is essential.
Contact us today for tailored treatment plans to address your needs and get the care you deserve.
Each patient has a plan made to suit them, their goals and their stages of injury/recovery.
