Bunions

At Bucks Podiatry, our team of podiatrists are here to help you overcome the challenges you are experiencing with bunions. We understand the limitations in footwear choices and the self-consciousness you may feel
Our foot specialists help to ease bunion pain and improve movement, allowing you to stand and walk for longer and have a wider selection of comfortable shoe options.
What is a Bunion?
A bunion, also called Hallux Valgus, is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It happens when the bones in the front part of the foot are misaligned, causing the big toe to point towards the smaller toes and pushing the base joint of the big toe to stick out.
Bunions are associated with painful, stiff, arthritic toe joints.
What causes a Bunion to form?
Bunions can develop in anyone due to several factors, such as:
  • joint hypermobility
  • foot posture
  • activity levels
  • wearing poorly fitting shoes, especially those with pointed toes
  • family history
  •  inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
How to fix Bunions
After your initial consultation, our podiatrists will use a comprehensive video gait analysis to accurately diagnose and pinpoint the underlying causes of your bunions. Following this, your podiatrist will create a personalised treatment plan specifically for your needs, using a variety of available options.
What if bunions are left untreated?
If a bunion isn't taken care of, it could lead to arthritis, especially if the joint in the big toe is significantly and persistently damaged. Bunions can cause the cartilage in the affected joint to wear down, worsening the condition. Surgery is an option for treating bunions, but it's important to note that arthritis and the possibility of chronic pain are conditions that can't be completely cured.
So Say goodbye to bunion discomfort and embarrassment. Book a consultation with one of our podiatrists, and let us help you.
Each patient has a plan made to suit them, their goals and their stages of injury/recovery.
